Dielman announces retirement

The left guard spot on the San Diego Chargers' offensive line will be filled by someone new in 2012, now that nine-year veteran Kris Dielman, an All-Pro, has officially announced his retirement.

“This is a celebration,” Dielman said. “It’s been nine years of playing football – extra years. I wasn’t supposed to play after college. I owe a great debt of gratitude to the Spanos family, the Chargers …”

Named in 2009 as one of the 50 Greatest Chargers of all time, Dielman suffered a concussion during an away game against the New York Jets last October 23. A grand mal seizure followed on the plane ride home after the game, and Dielman didn't play again for the rest of the season. His quality of life after retirement played the biggest role in his walking away.

“This was my decision,” he said. “Better get out when the getting out is good. It wasn’t worth what would have happened if I’d have kept on playing ... I didn’t want to have problems when I was older. I played a rough style of football. This one got me, and it’s time to move on.”

Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego has mentioned on radio and in print that the Chargers plan on replacing Dielman with Tyronne Green, who will be heading into his fourth season in 2012. But with premier talents such as Carl Nicks and Ben Grubbs expected to hit free agency this month, let's hope Acee is incorrect on that one.

Nevertheless, thank you to Kris Dielman for giving your all on every single snap during an outstanding career. Regardless of who takes your spot, you will be sorely missed.
