Welcome to San Diego, Robert!

After losing Vincent Jackson to Tampa Bay yesterday, the San Diego Chargers signed former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem to a four-year, $25.9 million deal last night. Meachem is guaranteed $14 million.

The 6-2, 210-pound pass-catcher caught 40 passes for 620 yards and six touchdowns last season. He isn't close to being the talent Jackson is, but there are some who believe Meachem is ready to break out as a #1 receiver for another team after often being the third or fourth option in New Orleans.

The Chargers just missed out on selecting Meachem in the first round of the 2007 draft, as he was grabbed by the Saints with the 27th overall pick. San Diego ended up with wide receiver Buster Davis at selection #30.

Hopefully, general manager A.J. Smith isn't done adding to the wide receiver depth chart. Although Meachem, Malcom Floyd, and Vincent Brown should make a nice trio, Floyd gets injured far too often, and Brown, despite showing sparks last year, is still somewhat of a question mark heading into his second season. The New York Giants' Mario Manningham is still available, although it's been reported he's talking to the Buffalo Bills, Miami Dolphins, and San Francisco 49ers.
